One of the preeminent stadiums in India, the location of the ground is such that it is situated in the heart of the city, with the picturesque Cubbon Park at one side and the uptown MG Road on the other end.
Backed by the Government of Karnataka, the foundation of the stadium was laid in 1969 and in the following year, the construction work commenced. Two years later, the stadium was inaugurated for a first-class cricket matches during the 1972-73 season. It was only in the 1974-75 season that the ground earned the Test status, when the West Indies toured India. Coincidentally, the stadium played host to the debut test match for the West Indian batting champions, Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge. Modernization Of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium
In the September of 1982, the first ODI match was played at this venue, wherein India played against Sri lanka, beating the guest by six wickets. In 1996, in the Wills World Cup tournament, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium was for the first time flanked with floodlights, thereby ¬assisting in day-night matches. The first day-night match was the quarter-final clash between arch-rivals, India and Pakistan, played on March 9, in which India defeated Pakistan, by 39 runs in a thrilling encounter.
Present Scenario
Since BCCI's selection of the stadium as the National Cricket Academy in 2000, there have been innumerable potential cricketers that have passed out from the Academy. With the launch of Indian Premier League (IPL), the ground also serves as the home ground of the Bangalore franchise team, the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Apart from cricket, the ground is also home to many musical and cultural events, slated to occur in Bangalore. Lately, the look of the ground was spiced up, as it was painted in red and yellow, the team colors of the Royal Challengers and also the colors of the Karnataka flag.
